August has always been known by the Press as the Silly Season — Parliament has risen, many people are on holiday, and generally there’s not a lot of serious stuff happening (for which relief, much thanks!). There are therefore acres of newsprint (and the digital equivalent) which have to be filled, and this generates a choice selection of odd stories.
The latest manifestation of this is on Twitter (for which, in fairness, the whole year is a Silly Season), and was initiated by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (the guys who dish out the Oscars) using the hashtag #DescribeAMoviePlotIn5Words.
As the Ronseal ad said, “it does exactly what it says on the tin”.
Here’s some of the easier entries —
- Apparently the mission was possible
• Result – Liner 0, Iceberg 1
• Family bonds during Colorado staycation
• Wed, wed, wed, dead, unwed
• Girl ignores National Weather Service
• Here’s looking at you, kid!
Harmless fun — and not (on the face of it) the subject of a business tip — but how would you respond to the challenge of summing up in five words what makes your business different from the competition?
I had a go at this for TAB.
“Brilliant advice from other business-owners” encapsulates (a trifle immodestly, perhaps) what we do — but “We help change people’s lives” sums up why we do it.
It’s important to be able to tell people (in as few words as possible) what makes you different from the competition — and if you can focus on the “why” rather than the “what”, it’s even more powerful (as Simon Sinek has pointed out).
You may not be able to boil it down to five words — but I challenge you to try — maybe when you’re relaxing by the pool!
