Peer support has energised my business ambitions

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, panic set in for many business owners, including Skylar Atkinson – who had just jumped with two-feet into her new business venture. However, some invaluable peer advice settled the nerves – and helped Skylar to pursue a new vision for her business.

Skylar Atkinson, managing director of Belvoir Aberdeen, says the guidance she has received from fellow TAB members has energised her business strategy and given her the confidence to move it forward.

Skylar, originally from Carlisle in Cumbria, moved to Aberdeen at 18-years old in the hope of spotting and pursuing career opportunities. From taking on various jobs in hospitality, retail, and management, she then went on to attain her bachelor’s degree in Law and Management at Robert Gordon University.

She started at an estate agent and lettings agency, Belvoir Aberdeen in 2017 as a part-time admin assistant, and began working her way up to leasing negotiator and then onto property manager.

The perfect opportunity emerged in 2019 when she had the chance to buy the business – her love of property and dream of owning her own business encouraged her to take the leap of faith at only 31-years of age.

However, after being plunged into a lockdown and having to manage furlough schemes, staff working from home and interpreting government guidelines, Skylar was quick to take up the opportunity to join TAB – a decision that has helped mould her into the businesswoman she is today.

Skylar said: “It all happened so quickly, and I wasn’t prepared. I had so many ideas and things I wanted to do with the business, but I didn’t know how to attack it – it made me realise how much more I had to learn as a business owner.

“That’s where the TAB board members were so welcoming and helped me mould my plans so that they were essentially bullet-proof.”

Belvoir Aberdeen is a specialist professional residential property lettings agency which is part of a chain of over 170 offices nationally.

With the help of goal setting and the accountability of fellow board members, Skylar has been able to increase the services that Belvoir Aberdeen offer, in turn developing a stronger brand.

Skylar's business now offers more services

From previously offering fully managed and let only services, Belvoir Aberdeen has recently added key holding and inspection services to its offerings and now support mid-market developments and housing in Aberdeen.

Skylar said: “Every time I attend a TAB meeting, I’m given more of a drive from all of the like-minded business owners. My ideas feel refreshed and I’m even more excited and motivated to move the business forward - it really helps to confirm you’re going in the right direction.”

Skylar has implemented other changes such as up-skilling staff with in-house training and taking part in charitable events.

Aside from work, Skylar sees a lot of value in the personal development opportunities that come with a TAB membership, which has helped her to prioritise her work-life balance and set personal goals.

She added: “I have recommended TAB to all my colleagues and will continue to recommend it to others. It’s so easy to speak out about certain things and the advice you receive is really relevant and underrated. In my opinion, it’s definitely worth the time and financial investment.”
